Doulas provide continuous practical and emotional support through pregnancy, birth and sometimes the early postnatal weeks. They are not clinicians and do not provide medical care, and they work alongside your midwife or doctor.
Women engage a doula when continuous support matters to them, particularly in a public system where the midwife on shift may change. Continuous support during labour is one of the better-evidenced things associated with a more positive birth experience.
