What a lactation consultant does

Lactation consultants help with feeding: attachment, supply, pain, tongue tie, mastitis, mixed feeding and weaning. An IBCLC holds an international board certification specific to lactation.

Most often in the early weeks, when feeding is being established and small adjustments make the biggest difference. Also later on for mastitis, supply changes, returning to work, or stopping. However you are feeding your baby, help is available and asking for it early tends to make things easier.

Referrals, fees and Medicare

You can book directly, without a referral.

A consultation with a lactation consultant who is not also an endorsed midwife is generally not claimable through Medicare. Where the consultant is an endorsed midwife, a Medicare rebate may apply for postnatal care in roughly the first six weeks. Some private health funds pay a benefit through extras, and cover varies a lot between funds, so it is worth ringing yours before you book.
